Clinical Evaluation of Pivmecillinam (Selexid¢ç) in Acute Simple Cystitis

Abstract
There is no general consensus of opinion on the duration of ¢¥antibiotic treatment for acute cystitis. Treatment may be continued for 7, 10 or even 14 days. Recent in vitro evidence indicates that just 3 days therapy with pivmecillinam may be effective. Authors studied to investigate this, the efficacy of a 3-day course (14Pts.) of pivmecillinam was compared with that of more conventional 7-days regimen (22Pts.) in 36 female patients with- acute cystitis during the period from April to December, 1982.
The results were summarized as follows;
1. Urinary frequency was resolved and improved in all cases.
2. Pyuria was cleared and decreased in 92.8% & 95.4% in the 3-day and 7-day - course, respectively.
3. The causative organisms detected were mostly E. coli(78. 4%) and these organ-isms were eradicated in all cases.
4. Incidence of symptomatic recurrences within 4 weeks later was in 14.2%, 13. 6% in the 3-day and 7 day course, respectively.
5. Rate of side effect was 7.1% & 9.0% in the 3-day and 7-day course, respectively.
6. Over-all effective rate was 92.9% & 90.9% in the 3-day and 7-day course, respectively.
In summary, this new narrow-spectrum penicillin is considered to be a useful chemotherapeutic agent in acute simple cystitis due to G(-) bacilli, especially E. coli, Similarly a 3-day course of pivmecillinam seems preferable, to 7-day treatment.
